A contractor typically manages a project while a carpenter carries out the physical work on-site. There are times when one person may perform a bit of both within the same project but they are different roles.

Unlike a designer who has accumulated all of their experience behind a computer, a carpenter knows very well what the most effective ways are to build and can therefore design accordingly.
